Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr. Returns Home to Livermore, CA After 81 Years

Livermore, California — This Memorial Day weekend, Livermore will honor 2nd Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr., a native son and WWII bombardier missing since 1944. Born in 1923, baptized at St. Michael Catholic Church, and a Livermore High School graduate, Kelly served in the 90th Bombardment Group. His B-24 was shot down over Papua New Guinea on March 11, 1944. After decades missing, his remains were located by Project Recover and identified in 2023 by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

He will be welcomed home with a motorcade and Lying in Repose at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens on Sunday, May 25. Funeral rites follow Monday, May 26, at St. Michael Catholic Church. His interment will be private. A new veterans memorial at Monte Vista will be dedicated in his name.
