Michael Mehan Obituary
Michael James “Mike” Mehan, beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on May 8, 2025, in Castro Valley, California, following a brave battle with cancer. Known for his quick wit and endless sense of humor, Mike continued to bring laughter to those around him until the very end.

Born on February 21, 1943, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Mike was the cherished son of John and Jo Mehan. Growing up alongside siblings Margaret, Mary Kay (Lee), Jack(Pam), Tim (Anne), & Terry countless shared memories. His parents, sisters Mary Kay and Margaret and brother Jack preceded him in death. Mike graduated from Saint Joseph College in East Chicago, Indiana, laying the foundation for a successful 42-year career as the proud owner of his own State Farm Insurance Agency. He was raised in Hammond Indiana and was transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1973.

He married the love of his life, Barbara, and together they raised three loving children: Mike Mehan (Sarah), Kelly Lux (Andy) & Kim Holland (Dan). A devoted family man, Mike especially cherished his role as a grandfather. His grandsons— Ryan, Scott, Drew, Matt and Mike—were his pride and joy. Whether cheering them on when playing baseball in Scottsdale or playing soccer at De La Salle, sharing stories, or simply spending time together on the golf course, he embraced every moment as their beloved “Grandpa Mike.”

Mike was passionate about sports, devoted player and enthusiastic coach of CYO basketball and softball teams. An unwavering supporter of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his team. He loved golfing with friends, especially the Skin’s group at Crow Canyon Country Club and the Twilights and Men’s Group Sequoia Woods in Arnold, CA.

He was known for always doing the right thing, even when it wasn’t the easiest path, and for lightening every room with his sharp wit and humor. His presence left a lasting impression, and his legacy of laughter, integrity, and authenticity will continue to resonate with everyone lucky enough to have known him.

A memorial service celebrating Mike’s remarkable life will be held on May 19, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Transfiguration Catholic Church, 4000 East Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley, CA, followed by a reception in Tabor Hall. All who knew Mike are warmly invited to attend and honor his memory.

Born in 1923, baptized at St. Michael Catholic Church, and a Livermore High School graduate, Kelly served in the 90th Bombardment Group. His B-24 was shot down over Papua New Guinea on March 11, 1944. After decades missing, his remains were located by Project Recover and identified in 2023 by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

“Whether cheering them on when playing baseball in Scottsdale or playing soccer at De La Salle, sharing stories, or simply spending time together on the golf course, he embraced every moment as their beloved “Grandpa Mike.”
